Did you know how hard it is to decorate a desk? Ever since quarantine – my shopping has been in overdrive (yes at one of the worst timing’s in the world!) It’s like telling a child they can’t eat that a piece of cake lingering in front of them. Just because they “CAN’T” it creates that sudden desire. Now in my defense, it’s mainly been home-goods or presents for Aspens 6th birthday. But still. Decorating a house (or a desk) is harder than it seems.
The other day I woke up emotional. Instead of throwing myself a pity party-I decided we would head out to complete my “home office”. I was fed up of working at my dining room table-and how can I be a blogger without a desk? I pictured Carrie typing on her laptop by her burgundy spotted curtains, told Aspen to throw on some clothes (and a mask) and out we went. I was a woman on a mission.
Now keep in mind very limited stores are open. Going to Target has been as exciting as it gets. I have scrolled Pottery Barn, Overstock, Wayfair, and even Amazon for months looking for something small and simple. Finally I had enough. I found a desk at Walmart (first spotted on the website and only sold in store) and a dining chair in Target. The wood on the legs of the chair matched my french country mirror. I also took a pillow from the lounger in my office and placed it on the chair for the perfect balance.
All in all I was incredibly lucky, it took less than 25 minutes to build and fit in my office perfectly. Much like clothes, I believe in pairing high and low for the perfect balance. So there I was with my new desk Googling desk decor, desk accessories and “how to decorate a desk”. I was at it for hours and posting away on my stories asking for tips/suggestions.
The winner was photo #4 (less is more) but a lovely lady (@foundbyjulie) also shared her decorating hack:
“Thriller. Filler. Spiller”
Thriller: Something exciting
Filler: Something low that takes up space
Spiller: Something that spills onto the surface
The next morning we went off to target to buy a lamp and my inbox was flooded with “Let’s see it now!” Messages. The reason I haven’t shared it (properly) is because I need a larger lamp. The one on my bedside unit was a splurge that matches the aesthetic of my house. I love it and ideally would get something similar for my desk. For the Thriller factor, I’d love to buy some white or natural pampas grass off Etsy and put it in a pot. There’s something so tranquil about them. Filler? Between a lamp and life I won’t have any problem with that one! Do you have any design hacks? I’d love to know!
