As devastation circulates the country regarding the Boston marathon tragedy that took place yesterday afternoon, my heart just breaks. As most of you may, or may not know my father is a huge marathon runner, who has run the Boston marathon, countless times. It hit home that everywhere that was bombed, were trodden grounds. Familiar places, and recognition.
My heart and prayers go out to those In Boston, those who lost, and those hurt. The terrorist attack which has been labeled “the worst attack on US soil since 9/11” has left 176 people injured, 17 people in critical condition, and 3 people dead. One of which was an 8 year old boy, Martin Richard who was waiting at the finish line for his father, to hug and congratulate him. His six year old sister also lost a leg in the bombings, and their mother has had to undergo brain surgery.
Police reveled this morning that the two bombs that went off were made from six-liter pressure cookers crammed with shards of metal, nails and ball bearings and stashed in black duffel bags. The cruelly designed bombs have ‘frequently’ been used in Afghanistan, Nepal, India and Pakistan, according to The Homeland Security Department. A similar device was used in the failed attempt to bomb Times Square three years ago. It is a preferred weapon of al-Qaeda terrorists and according to an English language terror magazine called “Inspire” the “most effective” weapon of the jihad.
Investigators still don’t know the motive of the bombs or have a specific suspect, but last night detectives raided a Boston home of someone with Saudi origin who was said to be around the scene acting suspiciously. As the United States remains in full alert and precaution, President Obama vowed to hunt down the culprits and “bring them to justice”.
After the two detonations ripped through the cheering crowds, one witness told CNN that it ‘felt like a huge cannon’ others described the horrific scenes of screaming spectators, missing limbs and unresponsive bodies.”Bodies and body parts. Blood all over” District Fire Chief Ron Harrington from the Boston Fire Department’s District 3 said. “A little boy lying in the street. A young woman in her twenties. Both dead. It was mayhem. I saw two people with arms hanging loose, and one without a leg. A shoe with flesh still in it.”
Many exhausted runners of the marathon continued running to the nearest hospital to donate blood, and those who stayed helped tend to the wounded by ripping their clothes off to make them tourniquets until later help arrived.
“It will take time to follow every lead and determine what happened. But we will find out. We will find whoever harmed our citizens and we will bring them to justice” said president Obama in his press room conference held this morning.
