The cheater-the bad boy- the one we just can’t get away from. As marriage becomes an extra, and Independence takes a turn,women no longer need a husband to rely on, to have a child with, or for happiness. It’s a reality that as time goes on, statistics increase. So is it fear or confidence? With articles surrounding women of ” having an expiration date” belittling a women’s capability to stay as “hot” as she was at 18. Why would anyone want to marry a man that said that, thinks that, or once wrote that? Sometimes the best is left unsaid.
Although I completely disagree that women have an expectation date, in theory death is everyone’s “expiration date”. In vows it is said that ” I take you to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part” so since when did death, switch to age?
An article written by Maria Slavitz proclaimed that both men and women no longer want to marry. “Men seek youth and beauty, while women focus on wealth and status”. Evolutionary psychologists have long claimed that these general preferences in human mating, are universal as well as based on biology. But new research suggests that they may be “malleable” as both men and women achieve financial equality.
As women start to earn the same economic freedom as men, mate seeking preferences tend to wane.It has also been said by writer Jessica Bennet that marriage is no longer necessary, from a legal and “practical” standpoint. A reader of the Newsweek article commented:”I see no need in marriage because it is like running to the side of the fire. Other people are divorcing on a daily basis and you are gong in”.
But since when did everyone start to compare their future to others? And is this really a universal statistic? Over the past twenty years, the divorce rate has surged by over 50%. More adults are remaining single as the traditional portrait of older Americans is changing. According to sociologists, this surge has been driven by several factors including: economics, longevity and evolving social morals.
So what happened to living happily ever after, Barbie and Ken, Cinderella and Prince Charming ( whatever his name might be)? Since the age of 5 I have been looking forward to wearing a Vera Wang wedding gown, a Harry Winston engagement ring, and of course, the right Prince Charming.
Statistics of marriage might be going down, but my opinion on marriage remains the same.
