Once I finally opted to join a gym, I was beyond excited. That was, until I started noticing my skin breaking out.
According to dermatologist Dr Hilary Reich, the reason breakouts form after working out is because “sweat from your workout mixes with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria that can overwhelm pores and lead to clogging”. Lush, I know.
Thankfully, there are a few preventative measures one can take to keep your skin as oil free and aerated as possible while working out. Dr Reich advises prepping your skin before a workout by removing any moisturizer, sunscreen or makeup you had on that day.
Clothing is also important if you’re prone to body breakouts. Lululemon has a silverescnt line of clothing, which is woven with antibacterial silver yarns. These yarns help keep the skin sweat/bacteria free, which reduces body breakouts.
As for sweating during your workout, Dr Reich states that “Towels can be essential during a tough workout, but the key is proper use. Gently Pat the skin to remove access sweat. Vigorous rubbing can irritate pores, causing inflammation and breakouts”.
Its imperative to wash your face/body as soon as you can, after a vigorous workout. The sooner you remove excess oil/sweat the less likely blemishes will appear. Last but not least, eating well is key to having a healthy body and clearer skin. The healthier you eat, the healthier your skin will look.
