I finally took the plunge and purchased the Oura ring. I have heard about this ring from family, friends, podcasters, everywhere I went there was a question of should I buy this ring or not. I’ll be completely honest: I am an avid Apple Watch user mainly for activity tracking and steps, so the switchover wasn’t an impulsive or overnight decision. I also thought that the ring would look to masculine on dainty hands, but when I saw a post on ring stacking, I was 88% sold.
I went back and forth on ordering it and realized that you have to either order a ring sizing kit (the $10 cost goes towards a credit to buying the ring) or go to your nearest Best Buy and try on their sizers. I did the latter, but didn’t end up making the purchase in Best Buy as the man told me they rarely have them in stock and it takes 2-3 weeks to ship out similar to the Oura ring website. So what did I do? Order it on amazon to be delivered the next day between 4-8am. Instant gratification.
As I don’t have a four carrot ring on my finger (nor currently in a relationship) I wanted the ring to be on my right hand. So I went with my middle finger and was instantly surprised at how good it looked. It didn’t look odd or bulky It just looked like a regular ring. I was debating between the silver and gold but decided as most of my jewelry was silver, that silver would be the best bet for me. Now my biggest hack for making this ring look less masculine and more feminine would be to stack it. So what I did was order 2 of these gold plated simulated diamond rings to wear either side of the Oura Ring. This instantly elevated the look for less than $20 per ring.
Now let’s get into the nitty gritty of data. I was skeptical and hesitant but at the same time, sick at the speed the Apple Watch drained at (and how it ruined every outfit). The ring arrived at 80% charged, so I was able to wear it immediately, download the app and start tracking. A few insights such as sleep, temperature and readiness, take 24 hours or so to log (but some data can take up to 1-2 weeks to get a baseline and sync). So was it worth it? so far 110% which is why I was so eager to write and rave about it.
Readiness provides your resting heart rate, HRV, body temperature, recovery index, sleep balance/ regularity, previous day activity, and activity balance.
Sleep provides your total sleep, efficiency, restfulness, REM sleep, deep sleep, latency, timing, average oxygen saturation, lowest heart rate and average HRV.
Activity provides your walking equivalency, total calories burned, training frequency time & volume/ recovery time.
Now these are just a FEW of the insights that the Oura ring provides and I can confidently say that this is a much better and efficient device over the Apple Watch. My only regret? That I didn’t purchase this ring sooner.
