After a very long week, I am finally back (and so is my blog). I’ve spent the past week focused on how I can really grow this platform and Instagram simultaneously. Starting with: less about me, more about you.
Between Google, Youtube, and podcasts (can I add in all the blood, sweat, and tears it takes into transferring, redesigning, and working with an entire team to revamp your website?!) I’ve learnt some very important lessons along the way. The other day I was swamped with work and decided to listen to Ed Mylett’s podcast featuring John Assaraf. The title was “Evolve Your Brain”. Now I have to be honest, before listening to Ed on the Skinny Confidential podcast, I was never really drawn to him. Upon first glance, he seems like a tough guy who yells like Gary Vee and may or may not be a professional WWE wrestler, but within minutes I was hooked. The episode shared how to re-program your mind.
What is the vision for your life? for your brand? Do you have a vision board or journal where you write down your dreams and desires? More importantly, do you believe you’re worthy of those dreams and desires? (I know what you’re thinking, I’m starting to sound like the Dali Lama over here…but to make a very long story short: I totally believe in the power of mindset & mentality) I believe we create the life that we want.
When I was working in Real Estate at BHS my broker had each one of his agents write down there sales goals. I wrote mine out and he told me I had sold myself short of my capabilities. It seemed like such a high number (and it was) and I didn’t believe it was possible. Did I accomplish that goal? Absolutely not. Shortly after I made a career shift into Marketing. Looking back, I realize the reason I never accomplished his goal wasn’t because I was incapable of achievement, it was because I didn’t believe it was possible. I was writing down his goals from me as a sales agent, not my own.
John Assaraf shares a similar story from when he was 19. His mentor asked him a very simple question that stuck with him: Are you interested or are you committed? because if you’re interested you will find an excuse, if you are committed you will find a way. That was one of the strongest takeaways from the interview. We can all find excuses, but instead why not shift your mindset? If you want something to happen you make it happen. When I was 21 and fell pregnant, everyone asked me what I was going to do and how I was going to raise a child as a single mother without a job. Honestly? I had no idea, but I said I was going to figure it out. I knew that I would and believed that I could. Within 2 years I was making close to six figures as a rental agent in NYC (at 24 whilst raising a child).
The interview ultimately lead me back to the first page on my Lily Pulitzer Planner where I had written out my 2020 goals for the year and I finally added a certain goal for my blog. Although it isn’t the best timing in the world, I decided it was now or never.
