Today I am sharing everything you need to know about acupuncture. If you know me you know two things:
1. I’m addicted to Amazon Prime
2. I’m a health enthusiast by heart
Ever since recovering from my eating disorder, I’ve been on a health kick by incorporating endorphins and nutritious food into my everyday life. I live off Vegetables, Pilates, and anything natural/nutritional that serves me value in one way or another. No, I don’t meditate (yet) but the past year has been a whirlwind of health issues leading me to try acupuncture.
Needles
There’s something about sticking a bunch of needles in your skin that sounds traumatizing. But once I determined acupuncture was my next venture, it was happening. I climbed into bed, did endless Googling, and even asked for center recommendations on my “UES Mommas” Facebook forum (yes that’s a thing).
I had over five people recommend Yinova, which was far from the UES but within perfect proximity to my office in Flatiron. Before I knew it, the elevator doors were opening and I was stepping into their (very tranquil)office. I was warmly welcomed by the receptionist and shortly after, led into a room.
Walking into the acupuncture room felt like walking into one of those 200 SQ FT IKEA showrooms (except smaller). The room gave a sense of transparency, and I could instantly smell the “spiritual sage”placed directly next to the bright red biohazard box.
Experience
My acupuncture therapist Katy sat down and we had an hour consultation where we discussed medical history, stressors, and a personalized treatment plan tailored to my needs. We also went over diet, supplements and Chinese medicine that I would be taking for the next 4 weeks.
I changed into a gown and laid on the table feeling a sense of vulnerability. The door opened and Katy walked me through the process of acupuncture using words like prick, flow, and energy.
She started inserting needles into my ankles, then worked her way up to my stomach, hands, ears, and forehead. I could definitely feel them be inserted, but nothing hurt or felt uncomfortable.
After the needles were placed, she gave me a buzzer which buzzed the front desk Incase anything felt “off” during my treatment. She dimmed the lights and stepped out for 30 minutes. That’s when the reality hit that I’m not Gwyneth Paltrow and I’m absolutely mad paying over $200 for needles to be pricked into my body.
Regardless, I was committed and wanted to take everything that I could from my session. After the needles were removed, I met my therapist one more time to discuss frequency and go over my personalized treatment plan. I would go once a week for 4 weeks and then biweekly.
I purchased all three supplements along with the customized formula she had put together. I was committed to giving acupuncture and Chinese medicine a solid shot even if it did some serious Amex damage.
