I started self care Sundays working a rigorous job in Manhattan. I commuted (from the Upper East Side to The Flatiron district) call that a commute if you will, but none the less dreaded Mondays. Perhaps it was the stillness of the weekend holding me down, but if you know me you know that I’m best when doing something 24/7. This trait has its benefits: like working 7 days a week (yes even on the weekend), but it also has its cons: like never slowing down.
That’s why I created my own version of Self Care Sunday, that doesn’t involve scrolling on instagram comparing the lives of people you went to college with, or watching a TikTok saga of an abandoned rug buried in the backyard (IYKYK). If you have absolutely no idea what I’m referring to, congratulations. You have much better self control than me.
The most important thing when creating a “Self Care Sunday” routine is to incorporate the things that you love to do. This can be: meal prepping, taking an “everything shower” (a term my 17 year old sister taught me), reading, taking a hike. Basically whatever floats your boat. This routine is going to be different for everyone, so take what you like and leave what you don’t.
- Take an everything shower. Pretty self explanatory and coined by the younger generation, but use a good hair mask, a body scrub, a shower steamer.
2. Self Tan. Once again, I understand that self-tanning isn’t for everyone. But if you like to have a little bit of color in what feels like a polar vortex (aka 23 degrees), then this one is for you.
3. DIY facial (Face mask, ice roller, under-eye patches) the entire 9 yards. I decided to link some of my favorite skincare products that I swear by as well.
4. Journal/Read. Earlier on in the year I fell in love with “Junk Journaling” (another thing I learnt from TikTok). In more savory terms, it’s a mix between a journal and a scrapbook. You can save things like stamps, tickets, receipts. Anything that has a memory attached or a story behind it. I’ve also read some very good books this year. The housemaid, The locked door, Things we never got over and many many more that I’ve forgotten the name of.
5. Last but not least: pick out some good outfits for the week. I definitely believe that if you can trick your mind into feeling confident and good, you will actually feel confident and good. If you need some new ideas, a closet clean-out, or maybe a personalized style guide- I offer the following services that you can learn about here. I also have so many outfit ideas and gift guides linked on my LTK page here.
