Have you read my Gwyneth Paltrow acupuncture experience where I was spending over $200 once a week to get needles stuck in me? I call it my Gwyneth moment because I was also splurging on Chinese Herbal Tinctures that tasted like Herbs and Licorice gone wrong, Incense that smelt like a cuboid full of species, and of course supplements sold in-clinic and marked up a ridiculous amount.
Now you’re probably wondering why? well to make a very long story short, I was experiencing extreme digestive issues. As I didn’t have insurance, and decided to try a more natural and holistic approach. I found a highly recommended clinic close to where I was working in Flatiron, booked an appointment – and the rest was history.
I can’t pin-point if it was the acupuncture, tinctures or supplements but something seemed to work and as the appointments slowly but surely dwindled – I decided to continue the supplements, buying them from a local pharmacy (vitamins) or Amazon (digestive enzymes and probiotics) instead. So this post is all about supplements that I love and take on a daily basis.
Supplements I Love
Digestive Enzymes – You know the saying, you get what you pay for? Well these digestive enzymes are worth every single penny. I use this exact brand and have been for many years. I take one twice a day to help my digestion.
Pre&Probiotic – So incase you didn’t know, you are supposed to rotate your prebiotic. But this is a brand that is on my rotation list. Pre & probiotics are so important for gut health and both have different benefits. Probiotics are the good live bacteria that naturally exist in your gut. Prebiotics are the food for probiotics. Without prebioitss the bad bacteria can take over the good and wreck havoc on your microbiome. To minimize how many pills I’m taking per day-i love this two in one formula. Another brand I have on rotation is Goodbio.
Prenatal Gummy Vitamin – Want to strengthen your hair and nails? You don’t need to be pregnant to take prenatal vitamins. I have been taking these since college (before Aspen was born!) to strengthen my hair and nails and let me tell you, they have worked wonders. Plus I love a good gummy vitamin. It reminds me of being a child and eating the Scooby doo ones.
Vitamin D3– I started taking vitamin D3 in attempt to help my adult acne. Let me tell you, it has done wonders for my skin. Vitamin D also helps support immune health, promotes healthy bones, and assists with calcium absorption.
L-Glutamine – You can buy L-Glutamine in pill(s) or powder. The exact powder that was recommended to me is here, but I prefer to take the pills linked as I’m fussy with powders. If you have any gut or digestive issues, I can not recommend this supplement enough.
Inulin-Yes you can buy import inulin from the south of France (I’m guilty of doing so) OR if you’re trying to be a little bit conservative you can find a great brand off Amazon which I now do – for the same efficiency. I put a teaspoon in my Nespresso every morning. Inulin is a great way to add additional fiber to your diet. I did an entire blog post on it here.
