She is the face of Burberry’s beauty campaign, the face strolling down almost every runway in New York, London, and Paris, and the face seen on the front of Spring 2013 Style Magazine . So who exactly is this “It girl”?
Cara is a 20 year old British Fashion model born on August 12th, and has walked over 39 shows, including those of such heavy hitters on the fashion calendar, such as: Moschino, Stella McCartney, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, and Chanel.
Being a sibling of 14, and raised in a $20 million dollar townhouse in Belgravia. The Delevingnes current wealth and social standing derives in path from Charles holdings and in part from the extended family. Caras maternal grandfather, Sir Jocelyn Stevens is a major influence in British media, having been the managing director of the “Evening Standard” and the “Daily Express” in the 1960s. Her grandmother Janie Sheffield, is a lady in waiting to princess Margaret.
Still residing in her $20 million dollar family home, she gives Alexander Furry a tour of the townhouse. The tour included a visit to her drum kit and a bizarre closet filled with high tops, and animal costumes.She zips on one of her panda costumes, shrugs and explains”I like to wear it around the house”. The tour then continues down a stairway, decorated with multiple group portraits of Cara and her sisters. Two of her sisters are Chloe and Poppy, 28 year old Chloe has a members club in South Kensington named after her while 26 year old Poppy is a former model and ambassador for Chanel.
Cara has advertised for many brands such as: Blumarine, Zara, Chanel and H&M. But her success does not stop their, she has walked down the runway for Moschino, Oscar De La Renta, Victoria’s secret, Jason Wu, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Stella McCartney and Chanel. She has also graced the covers of Vogue UK, Vogue Korea, i-d, Russh, Jalouse and Style, but don’t call her an “It” girl, expecting it to be a compliment.
“If you call her the next Kate Moss, or the new twiggy, she’ll sneer and ask what she’s got in common with either of them, aside from the fact that they’re all English and waifish. If you tell her she’s beautiful, she will roll her eyes.”(Furry, 2013). Shuttering from castings to fittings to shows to parties, it is clear that the twenty year old is overwhelmed, but she insists that modeling is an “act” for her as her caterpillar eyebrows knit in an expression of serious focus, and her spindly legs make an exaggerated stomp. It’s impossible to manage an allure you don’t understand, and in caras place its difficult to take credit for that allure and not fear that it will suddenly abandon you.
So well done Cara for being yourself, wearing a panda costume, and fighting the title of an “it girl” to be something better.
